The code is published under GPLv3 and LGPLv3. An explanation of issues to avoid and good practice to follow with BIOS and ACPI to ensure firmware works well with Linux first time. An explanation of PulseAudio's timer-scheduling mode and its mixer, and what sound drivers, BIOS and hardware must support for these features to work. An overview to familiarise OEM/ODMs with the QA process within Canonical's OEM Services Boot time and hardware enablement, debugging, multitouch, networking... and much more.

Vodafone Webbook with Ubuntu software launched in South Africa

London 18th October: Canonical today announces that Vodacom, the African subsidiary of Vodafone, has launched the Vodafone Webbook, which is available to users exclusively with the Ubuntu software. The goal of the product is to bring an affordable, full-featured online computing experience to millions of young South Africans to whom owning a personal computer has to date been impossible.

The Webbook is a slim, lightweight and sleek design that matches perfectly with the intended mobile computing usage. The product features Ubuntu’s incredibly easy-to-use, intuitive and highly graphical interface. It comes packed with applications and access to hundreds more from the scientific research tools to fun games for the family. It also innovates through use of an ARM processor to drive the device, and reduce cost and power usage.

“Ubuntu’s founding principle is to remove the barriers of access to computing for everyone,” said Mark Shuttleworth, founder and product strategist at Canonical. “Products like this give hope of connectivity to the three billion people of our planet who are unconnected today. It’s a step, we hope one of many more, that puts people on a level playing field in terms of the tools they use and the worlds they can explore,” says Mark.

Speaking about the Webbook, Chris Ross, Managing Executive of Commercial Development at Vodacom said: “The Vodafone Webbook is going to offer the end user a compelling, mobile or at-home computing experience at an affordable price. We think this device is going to be particularly important and attractive for the emerging market.”

The device is evidence of a growing trend in emerging markets to look at alternative technologies to drive the huge growth in IT and telco usage. Ubuntu has seen substantial growth in China, India and across the developing world as a legal, full-featured and flexible technology that offers manufacturers and purchasers a real alternative that embraces an operating system, a compelling application stack and access to the cloud. Ubuntu’s ability to run on Intel and ARM chipsets also gives flexibility on cost, especially important in markets where every dollar saved can make a real impact on the success of a product.

Ubuntu 12.04 to feature extended support period for desktop users

London, October 21st, 2011: Canonical today announced it would be extending the support and maintenance period for its upcoming Long Term Support (LTS) release of Ubuntu for desktop users from three years to five years. The move comes in response to increasing demand for Ubuntu desktops in corporate environments where longer maintenance periods are the norm. It brings the desktop product into line with Ubuntu Server which continues with five years of support for LTS releases.

April 2012 will see the fourth LTS release of Ubuntu. LTS releases have become particularly popular with Ubuntu business users. Canonical's own survey data shows over 70% of server users are deployed on LTS versions of the product. Bringing this extended support to the desktop is a response to similar popularity in businesses of the desktop LTS releases.

The first two years of the LTS period will benefit businesses by including hardware updates (through regular point releases) allowing them to keep up to date with the latest hardware upgrades. Maintenance updates will continue for a further three years. Businesses can now rely on always running an LTS version regardless of their hardware refresh rate.

PC manufacturers can now standardise their business-focused range of PCs on an LTS release with a five year support period. This is a more compelling proposition to bring to their customer base especially aligned with the Ubuntu Advantage support programs from Canonical which will fully support the new LTS period

“Ubuntu has always been known for its ability to keep pace with the latest applications and hardware” says Rick Spencer, Ubuntu Engineering Director at Canonical. “But as our user-base grows and matures the ability to plan for the longer term is vital. Ubuntu 12.04 LTS will give desktop users the perfect combination of keeping pace with hardware changes and extended support depending on their needs”.

Ubuntu's fourth LTS release comes at a time when the product has seen unprecedented uptake at a large scale in a variety of businesses. Qualcomm, the City of Munich, LVM have all spoken recently of their use of Ubuntu at large scale.

Ubuntu One now allows you to stream your entire music collection to all your devices. You can also access and share files, documents and photos online with Android and now Windows machines, utilising 5GB of free storage that is available to every Ubuntu One subscriber.

The central search-driven interface to Ubuntu, called the Dash, has been enhanced to include instant access to your personal and online music collections through the music lens, which will also search the Ubuntu One Music Store. This provides almost instant access to any music: either from your personal collection or online stores and services. To help you find the music you love, Ubuntu includes instant access to Last.fm, the Amazon MP3 store, and a huge collection of free content in the public domain or under open licences.

Ubuntu 11.10 comes with a full backup facility as standard. Called Deja Dup, it allows you to back up locally or to the Ubuntu One cloud. You can schedule backups and restore from a backup, providing you with a ‘time machine’ capability. All for free.

Ubuntu 11.10 also sees a full update to GNOME 3. That means you will have access to the most modern and stable versions of the highly-regarded application set. The popular cross-platform Thunderbird from Mozilla will become the default email app in Ubuntu, with Evolution remaining as an option for download.

From client to cloud, Ubuntu 11.10 sets the pace for business IT

London, October 13th, 2011: The latest iteration of products, tools and services that help businesses deploy open-source cloud-oriented infrastructure with Ubuntu at the core have been announced. With Ubuntu 11.10 for desktop, server and cloud, Canonical delivers open platform solutions for all key parts of business technology infrastructure.

Ubuntu 11.10 will be published on October 13, 2011 for free public download.

The deployment, management and orchestration tools that DevOps practitioners need to embrace cloud computing are central to this platform. Ubuntu 11.10 introduces Juju (codenamed Ensemble during development) for service deployment and orchestration across multiple cloud infrastructures, large-scale bare-metal deployments and workstation-based service prototyping.

Juju enables infrastructure and service developers to describe the deployment and scaling requirements of their applications, simplifying and enhancing the dialogue between developers and ops teams. Juju can be referred to as “DevOps Distilled” because it brings such clarity to the development-deployment dialogue and process. Juju simplifies deployment across multiple cloud providers and farms of physical servers running cloud-style workloads such as Hadoop.

This is the final release prior to Ubuntu’s next Long Term Support (LTS) release, due in April next year. “Ubuntu 11.10 gives forward-looking companies a chance to road-test the cloud and desktop technologies that will change the game for IT cost and performance” says Jane Silber, CEO of Canonical. “We’re thrilled to deliver multiple firsts with this release: a technology pre for the ARM architecture on servers, cloud infrastructure and Juju service orchestration in the box.”

Ubuntu Cloud Infrastructure now includes OpenStack as the core infrastructure-as-a-service (IaaS) element of Ubuntu Cloud. Canonical’s investment in lightweight container technology LXC alongside the well-known KVM and Xen virtualisation technologies, has resulted in a tightly integrated cloud infrastructure solution that works across all hardware platforms. That means any business can deploy Ubuntu Cloud Infrastructure on their preferred server platform today.

Ubuntu Server 11.10. includes smart tools for provisioning and deploying Ubuntu across multiple physical servers. Field tested in deployments of thousands of nodes, Ubuntu 11.10 raises the bar for high-volume low-touch server OS deployment. These tools give administrators a standardised and fully automated way to deploy Ubuntu Server that minimises manual intervention and ensures consistency.

Ubuntu Server 11.10 sees Ubuntu become the first general-purpose, server-focused operating system that supports the ARM architecture. This adds to Ubuntu’s existing support for a huge range of Intel x86 server configurations from the world’s leading manufacturers. ARM support is released as a technology preview, and Canonical has done significant work to support the architecture with the core OS and with essential high-volume server applications such as the LAMP stack. The ARM architecture is considered to have the potential to improve the performance per watt density of data centres dramatically. With the choice of Intel x86 and now ARM, Ubuntu Server 11.10 gives power-sensitive companies the opportunity to assess the best solution for their requirements.

Canonical has also improved LXC integration in Ubuntu, and added LXC support to OpenStack as a technology preview. LXC offers lightweight workload separation, with improved utilisation on all servers and support for all architectures, so for the first time users can start to explore ARM-based clouds. For deployment, Ubuntu Cloud Infrastructure is fully supported on x86-based servers.

For business desktop users, Ubuntu 11.10 continues to build on the Unity user experience introduced in the April 2011 release of Ubuntu 11.04. Machines with less powerful or modern graphic cards now have Unity in 2D, allowing every user to enjoy the widely acclaimed new interface. Unity is now fully supported on ARM, making extremely low-power and low-cost thin clients possible for large-scale institutional deployments. Another change sees the popular and cross-platform Mozilla Thunderbird replace Evolution, giving businesses a more up-to-date and feature-rich email client.

Ubuntu has seen significant uptake in recent months as the corporate and desktop desktop of choice at organisations as diverse as Qualcomm, the City of Munich and LVM Insurance. This release continues on that trajectory, offering businesses a compelling and lower cost alternative to Windows on the business desktop. Cost and security-conscious enterprises with 5,000 or more desktops will want to identify teams or divisions which would be more productive on Ubuntu, and to plan a migration program that delivers real benefits both to users and the bottom line.
